Beaches
There are a number of beaches in and around Hobart. We recommend Hinsby Beach, Taroona, for a sheltered and relaxing beach trip.
Mona
- By ferry — catch the ferry from Brooke Street Pier on the Hobart waterfront for a trip up the Derwent River. Book tickets ahead to get your preferred departure time.
- By car — about 20 minutes from Hobart. Free onsite parking, though it fills at peak times. Roughly $30 by Uber.
- By bus — Mona runs a direct bus from Brooke Street Pier, priced the same as the ferry. The Metro local bus (routes 510, 520, 521, 522, X20) also stops outside the front gates.
Bruny Island
Remote island landscape, accessible by car-carrying ferry. Home of the Bruny Island Cheese Co. and Get Shucked oyster farm.
The Huon Valley
Drive south through Huonville and Cygnet to apple country. Fresh apples from roadside stalls when in season. Stop at Willie Smiths Apple Shed for cider and local produce, and Summer Kitchen Bakery for organic breads and pastries.
The Derwent Valley
Drive west to New Norfolk and explore the leafy river communities of the Derwent Valley — home to the Agrarian Kitchen restaurant and kiosk, wineries, and a growing list of small independent shops. Stop for coffee and a browse at the Black Swan Bookshop, plus second-hand, antique and homewares shops full of country-town treasures.
